Instant On Camera

Instant On Camera is the third On Camera book. It’s designed to give you practical, easily accessible advice on both programme-making and operating the camera.
Each of the programme-making sections - Storytelling, Drama, Factual Programmes - starts with a discussion of the Key Concepts involved, then goes on to suggest ideas for hands-on Projects and concludes with a series of Briefings on the core techniques of producing and directing. These sections are designed to develop your skills, so if you work through the contents and shoot the projects in the order in the book, you will in effect be putting yourself through a graded training course.

You can, of course, also use Instant On Camera for information and advice about whichever part of the programme-making process you are tackling simply by consulting the relevant Briefings.

However you use the book, you should take on board the Key Concepts and their implications for practical programme-making at the start of each section.

Going Solo covers ‘self-op’ - programme-making without a crew. It’s worth reading even if you never touch a camera, as it offers the basic technical grounding you need to be a good director.
